The Vivian A. Bull Music Center contains many state-of-the-art features including a concert hall, a rehearsal room, a sheet music library and improved “smart” classrooms, which are highly insulated soundproof rooms to prevent sound bleeding through the walls and disrupting other classes. In addition to the challenging technological aspects of the project, WALSH’s team was responsible for intricate finish work on both the interior and exterior of the building. Inside, thin wooden panels form a curved pattern to provide added soundproofing. Outside, a sophisticated design incorporating brick, concrete, wood and glazing creates the building’s dramatic look. Large glass panels come together to form a point, and are surrounded by a delicate angled pattern of individual wood panels, recessed in some places, that were cut and matched up to align perfectly. The location features a recital hall, seating 100 people, with windows spanning from ground to ceiling allowing a natural background to performances.
