The City of Books, flagship store for Powell’s Books, wanted to increase their retail floor space by 56%. The result was an additional 40,000 SF on four floors of steel frame. Columns at the entrance are sculptured as a stack of books. Author readings and other events are now held in a spacious room that can seat up to 200 people with standing room for 100 more. This space also has been designated as an art gallery. To make this unique, multi-leveled structure handicapped accessible, a three-sided elevator was installed providing access to seven different levels in the store.
