Lander Hall is 226,000 SF, with 357 dorm units and 643 beds. The first two floors house a regional desk/student services, offices, study lounges, laundry area and dining hall providing meal service to the west campus neighborhood. Lander Hall’s Local Point restaurant features a 3,000 SF commercial kitchen with a demonstration/presentation area in an interactive classroom setting, and a central dining facility for students in eight campus buildings.

Lander Hall was built to achieve extremely high standards for energy efficiency, with a high-performance building envelope expected to perform twice as efficiently as the standard. Targeting LEED Gold certification, the building makes efficient use of natural light and Seattle’s regular climate to conserve energy that otherwise would have been used for artificial lighting, heating, and cooling. Proactive management of the LEED certification process yielded enough additional points to exceed the initial Silver goal and achieve Gold.
WALSH used virtual design (BIM) technology to construct Poplar, Alder and Lander Halls, allowing the team to coordinate layout of complex systems and solve problems before construction commenced. Three-dimensional models were created and used for dimensional coordination and visualization of conflicts. BIM was used in nine different scopes — from the integration of the MEP trades, to finish and structural systems. With the use of BIM, our team was able to respond faster to the design changes and resolve constructability issues efficiently and effectively.
