A 44-unit affordable housing complex planned in Gresham is being designed to cater to seniors and individuals with physical disabilities.
Portland-based DAO Architecture is designing the estimated $9 million to $10 million Station 162 for Portland-based QUAD Inc., said Alena Guggemos, the nonprofit’s development director. The four-story complex at 306 S.E. 162nd Ave. in the Rockwood neighborhood will be the fifth affordable housing development that QUAD has built in the Portland metro-area to support its mission of enabling individuals with disabilities to live independently, she said.
The project is still in the design phase and going through the design review process with the city of Gresham, Guggemos said. A public meeting to share project plans with neighbors is scheduled for Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m. at 240 S.E. 160th Ave.
Station 162 is slated to have 22 residential units with preference for tenants with physical disabilities, 21 with preference for seniors and one for the building manager, Guggemos said. Like units in QUAD’s other complexes, all Station 162 units will be accessible by wheelchairs and include other features such as roll-in showers, which allow paralyzed and elderly tenants to live independently, she said.
“Everything is fully-accessible beyond full (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance,” she said. “Everything is in place if you can imagine if you have very limited arm strength what you would need to navigate your home.”
The building will also include an accessible community room on the ground floor, a shared courtyard and a rooftop garden and patio.
Walsh Construction Co. crews are scheduled to break ground this fall and finish about a year later.
